Nearly 35% of all adults
complain about problems with insomnia. This problem can hit anyone at
any age but as we get older, insomnia difficulties tend to rise. It
might be an inability to get to sleep, stay asleep, sleeping only in
spurts, waking up too early in the morning, experiencing sleep apnea
or anything else related to insomnia.
Treating insomnia can sometimes
be accomplished with a little common sense and some natural remedies.
For instance, cutting back on caffeine, alcohol and nicotine can greatly
reduce the incidence of insomnia. Other natural remedies might include
taking over the counter sleep aids, not exercising three hours prior
to bedtime, meditation and more. For some people, treating insomnia
may best be done under the careful supervision of a sleep specialist.
Insomnia is usually a symptom
of some type of underlying physical or psychological condition. Insomnia
is most often caused by tension, anxiety and depression. Lack of sleep
could be caused by any number of factors. Chronic pain, certain medications,
lifestyle choices or even just a bad mattress can cause problems with
insomnia. A sleep specialist can help you determine what is causing
you to not sleep. The first step in treating insomnia is finding out
the cause.
